The Dish: Former Dallas Cowboys Fan Tells All

I was a Dallas Cowboys fan.

I really did: I was born in New England and came onto the NFL consciousness in the mid-1970s. The six-year-old version of me stuck with America’s team. Maybe it was a bright star. Maybe they were pretty cheerleaders. I was a Roger Staubach fanatic. I freaked out when Jackie Smith dropped a TD pass in the Super Bowl. I screamed about Danny White’s vanity. I hate The Catch. I enjoyed Jimmy Johnson’s resurgence and actually lived in Texas for three-Super-Bowls-in-four-years. In the late 90s I suffered.

But I’m not rooting for Dallas much anymore. Being a columnist is part of that; It gets harder and harder to pick sides. But part of it is the 2006 version of the team. This is officially unbearable.

I love Bill Parcells. I didn’t like him much when he coached the Giants, but I respected him. When he coached my favorite AFC team, the Patriots, I liked the guy. And when Dallas announced they hired him, I thought: finally. But Parcells is teetering. In every press conference and during every game, his career seems to flash before his eyes. He has this batch of mistakes and who can blame him?

I’ve given enough pixel-dust to Terrell Owens in this space. He is the poster child for what is wrong with American pro sports. But there’s also the idiot kicker, Mike “Earring” Vanderjagt. There’s Drew Bledsoe, who looks like a classmate, but is downright painful to watch playing quarterback. There’s an owner whose liposuctioned face resembles a crypt-keeper and who insists on playing general manager despite his undisputed record of utter failure at the position. Heck, on this team, Terminal Grocer Terry Glenn seems like a good guy. They walk on defense like they’re good (they’re not), and they argue on the sidelines like a COPS re-run.

Basically it’s a group of miserable people. They dominate the headlines for knuckleheaded non-issues (most of which, I agree, revolve around Owens, aka, the world’s baddest guy). They act like idiots when they win and act like idiots when they lose. The milk has curdled. The pudding is spoiled.

And here’s something I never thought I’d say: I don’t like the Cowboys anymore.

How has the World Series betting done? Was it mostly pro-Tigers before the series started? Has that changed as we’ve progressed, and have the Cardinals made it clear that they’re not to be taken lightly?

BoDog Bookmakers, BoDog.ws: The Tigers haven’t been as heavily favored so far in the postseason as people might think. In the first round matchup against the Yankees, Detroit was underrated and the more they were winning, the more people thought the Yankees were a sure bet. Then they faced a very strong-looking Oakland side, where both sides had mixed action based on who was taking the mound. After the sweep there, bookies began to take notice of the talented Detroit lineup. In Game 1 of the World Series, we saw most of the money fall on Detroit, who at the time had posted seven consecutive postseason wins. But the Cardinals made a statement with a 7-2 win. The last two match-ups saw two Aces head to the hill: Rodgers in Game 2 and Carpenter in Game 3. The action was a bit heavy in these cases based on the star pitchers. The Cards look very comfortable in the postseason and have had plenty of practice over the years. With a 2-1 lead, it’s pretty clear they’re racing to finish this thing on their own turf.

What a crazy, underdog-filled Week 7 in the NFL: By my count, eight ‘Dogs posted straight-up wins. Of course, it’s not unprecedented, but I’m assuming it was a good week for the books? Care to tell us which games were the worst beats for the bettors?

BDB, BoDog.ws: It was a good week for the books with a handful of big upsets. Tampa Bay’s miracle win over Philadelphia, Oakland’s run over a Bears-challenged Arizona team, and Kansas City’s loss at home to San Diego are the biggest knocks for the crowd.

The NBA opens on October 31st (how disgusting!). Right here, right now: Give us your NBA finalists and tell us why.

BDB, BoDog.ws: Cleveland and Phoenix. Cleveland because the NBA needs him; LeBron showed last year that the team has playoff potential. If he can lead the team to the Finals now, the NBA could use this story to try to bring the league back to Jordan’s glory days. Phoenix because San Antonio is so boring, and if Detroit sweeps the East, at least we won’t have to take a nap in the NBA Finals again.

What do you think of the NFL’s decision to host two regular-season games each year on international soil? Do you think this will have a negative impact on the participating teams? Do you think this will do anything specifically for betting?

BDB, BoDog.ws: It seems odd that the NFL would go international for two regular-season games. The preseason is understandable, but it can definitely put some extra fatigue on the teams involved. Say, flying to Japan in the middle of the week and returning to the US on Monday morning to prepare for the following week is certainly not as easy as a two- to three-hour cross-state flight. If the games have similar TV coverage, this shouldn’t affect the betting too much. Hey, who are we to question one of the most successfully run leagues in the world?
