It’s A Jersey Thing: 5 Unconventional Hockey Jersey Styles

hey everyone,

As some of us identify as hockey fans, we definitely have our favorite team and we definitely have our favorite jersey.

How some of us see or use our jerseys is sometimes very different from each other.

Some of us enjoy having a jersey of our favorite team with no name on the home back. They simply show their support for the team they are cheering for. Some of us want the authentic cut jerseys that players wear on the ice; If you are a die-hard fan.

It doesn’t matter how you wear it, it doesn’t matter when you wear it, all that matters is that you’re doing it for the sport you love and nothing else.

On occasion, looking at the jersey you might think; “Hey, that’s an interesting design.” Someone can post his picture on the internet and it can be discussed on social media. Some of you might stop scrolling and take a good look at it and give it a quick like. Some of you may look into it a little more and discover that the jerseys are for a charitable cause. Some of these jersey designs are cool and some are downright ridiculous but it’s worth a good laugh or a jaw-dropping reaction. Many of these jerseys are made for promotional efforts and auctioned off for charity and are another reason why hockey is one of the greatest sports on earth. Sometimes though, the reason goes beyond the jersey colors and deeper. Some of these jerseys definitely have cultural symbolism. It has caused some controversy.

Military Inspired Camouflage Jersey:

Several NHL teams are on board wearing these military inspired jerseys during warm ups to support and recognize the national military. Fans have polarizing views on these jerseys but it’s not to promote style, it’s to promote a good cause. Some people have said that these jerseys don’t serve a purpose and don’t help the military, but if you care about how it helps the military, you need to know where your money is going before you buy military inspired merchandise.

The MSE (Monumental Sports and Entertainment) Foundation recently raised $46,000 by auctioning off military-inspired Washington Capitals jerseys at a Washington Capitals home game on February 5, 2016. Funds raised are used to support family members of soldiers serving in the military, soldiers with PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and veterans. Jerseys were autographed and sold during the event. These jerseys weren’t just sold to raise funds; Pucks, helmets, sticks and other equipment were also sold to raise funds for this honorable cause.

It’s mostly just these private auctions where money is raised for these types of charities. Most official sports retailers that offer military camouflage jerseys sell for profit only unless it states that proceeds from each sale go to a charity. Some retail stores sell these jerseys but others don’t because they don’t want the controversial image of using military fashion to make a quick profit. It’s not just jerseys where the camouflage design is used, it’s also on caps, tops and shirts. Soldiers who have served in the military dislike that retail stores use military imagery for profit because it is a weak expression of support for the military and the military image is exploited for promotional purposes so that corporations can make a profit.

Star Wars Themed Jersey:

It’s easy to admit that these jerseys are ‘out-of-the-box’ in terms of jersey design. For Star Wars fans who love hockey, here are some of the most epic jersey designs to date. The Vancouver Giants and Saskatoon Blades of the WHL (Western Hockey League) each had a Star Wars night to commemorate the 2015 box office hit; Star Wars – The Force Awakens.

Star Wars Night was held for the Saskatoon Blades on November 28, 2015 and the entire Saskatoon Blades team wore these jerseys for their home game against the Edmonton Oil Kings. The jerseys weren’t just for bringing scholars to hockey games, they were for charity. Player-worn jerseys are signed by players and auctioned after the game. Proceeds from the auction went to Saskatchewan’s food banks.

The Vancouver Giants also had their own version of this beautiful Star Wars jersey but unlike the Blades, the Giants went “dark side”. The Giants wore it for their home game against the Kootenay Ice on December 4, 2015. Similar to what the Blades did, the Giants also signed these jerseys and auctioned them off for charity. Proceeds went to Shriners Hospital for Children.

LA Dodgers Pride Night Jersey:

The Los Angeles Kings have a ‘Dodgers Pride Night’ once every season. It is based on a partnership agreement between the Los Angeles Kings and the Los Angeles Dodgers, a Major League Baseball team. This is as much an advertisement for a charitable cause as it is for both major sports teams. Fans attending this annual event not only get to watch the game, but also get a chance to win LA Kings themed baseball and in-game prizes.

Dodger’s inspired hockey sweaters used for warm-ups were signed and auctioned off after the game. Proceeds went to the King’s Care Foundation.

Flint Firebirds “Tropics” Jersey:

Based on the 2008 box office hit Semi-Pro, this jersey was a parody of the Flint Tropics, the name of the basketball team in the movie. Since this is the Flint Firebirds we’re talking about here, wouldn’t it be convenient to have “Jackie Moon” sanction a Flint Tropic hockey jersey for a promotional event?

The Flint Firebirds did just that when they hosted “Flint Tropics Night” in Flint, Michigan. The Firebirds hosted Owen Sound Attack on February 13, 2016 for the event. It was a huge draw for the Firebirds as they had a terrible season dealing with numerous ownership disputes and many lost games. Jerseys were auctioned off after the game for charity, and it was a night where the Firebirds and fans had fun regardless of the outcome of the game.

St. Patty’s Day Hockey Jersey:

Like military jerseys, St. Patty’s Day jerseys are used by many NHL teams for pre-game warm ups but not without controversy. This is a great promo because St. Patty’s Day is very popular and if you haven’t guessed already, pre-game warm up jerseys are signed and auctioned off by many teams for charity. Whether NHL teams or some junior league teams participate, it is a very popular event in Canada and the United States. It always works out great as it’s a great excuse to celebrate spring and a great reason to order a few pints of Guinness for you and your friends.

How can anyone hate St. Patrick’s Day?
