PES Games – A History Of Pro Evolution Soccer Part 1

Pro Evolution Soccer is a football (soccer) video game with legions of fans around the world. PES games are produced for all major consoles including PS3, XBOX 360, Wii and PC and distributed across all five continents making it a global powerhouse.

Pro Evolution Soccer games have been around since 1996 when the uniquely titled Goal Storm launched the Konami franchise. The two games went head-to-head throughout this period, along with Electronic Arts’ (EA) FIFA series, dominating the football video game scene. PES games have always focused on playability and similarity to real football, while FIFA is mostly about being ‘official’, sacrificing game play for license and the arcade style of the game.

The franchise has undergone several name changes in Europe and North America, with the game currently being called PES and then having a release year next year, so this year’s latest installment, released this October, will be called PES 2013.

The initial name Gol Storm lasted only one year before changing to ISS Pro in 1997. It later changed to the ISS Pro 98 and was followed by the ISS Pro Evolution in May 1999, marking the first appearance of ‘evolution’. title. At this point in the game’s history, updates weren’t being released at regular intervals, and I was first introduced to the game in 2001, with the arrival of ISS Pro Evolution 2.

Unlike Europe and North America, in Japan – home of Konami, Pro Evo has retained the ‘Winning Eleven’ name from the start, with the prefix ‘World Soccer’ added after the first few years.

What sets Pro Evo apart from other football games is the gameplay. The action takes place on the sidelines and the ball can be kicked in any direction, unlike FIFA games where any directional shot always flies towards the goal, making the game appear staged.

Previous games that stayed true to football like Sensible Soccer were top down views, meaning you played with the television/monitor screen up or down. Graphics were limited in the 1990s, but FIFA and Pro Evo began to change all that – taking their respective games in different directions from game to game.

From the start, Pro Evolution Soccer did not have naming rights for players or teams, so early on in the franchise, an in-game editing option was created. It allows savvy gamers to edit players and teams, replacing fake names with real names. I remember spending hours recreating football strips and renaming all the players until the PES fan forum started trending towards option files and max drives.

These save options files were created by fan groups and then uploaded to forum pages and download sites via the Internet, so that fans could quickly save and rename all players in the game. Now they had good looking players, kits and real names, but it still didn’t compare to FIFA’s official licenses, but it didn’t have to, the players just wanted a resemblance, because it was always the game play that brought it back. Pro Evo fans year round.

The gameplay was honed in the following years as ISS Pro Evolution 2 became Pro Evolution Soccer in 2001. AI (artificial intelligence) made the game smarter and changed the pace of the game regularly, sometimes speeding up. Konami then slowed down for the next release as it tried to find a balance. Rather than just button mashing, tackling became an art, and training methods were introduced to allow players to practice before doing things in actual games.

Discussions on the PES forums indicated that FIFA and Konami were virtually at loggerheads over licensing issues (Manchester United were no longer ‘Man Red’, they were now ‘Aragon’!), forcing Konami to make fake team names even more obscure. This always gave new challenges to editing masters and fans that Konami would fight for the license for the next game – considering PES 2013 to date this has not happened yet.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2 introduces commentators Peter Brackley (voice of Football Italia on Channel 4) and Trevor Brooking to add a new dimension to realism. Listening to someone famously talk about your team during a play sounds exciting in principle, but the limitations of technology mean it can quickly become boring, monotonous and often irrelevant.

By comparison, music was presented on the menu screen, with Queen announcing ‘We Will Rock You’ and ‘We Are The Champions’ among other artists and tracks. Music in the menu was a welcome addition as you can spend a lot of time negotiating these pages, especially if you’re editing. This has been maintained and improved by Konami over the years, until now, often using small, unheard or unknown groups and providing them with a platform to reach people through their music.

In Part Two of PES Games we look at the ongoing battle with FIFA, the move to online and high definition gaming, and how we hope to reclaim the football video game crown with PES 2013.
