Europe’s Flourishing Festival Scene

Music festivals have taken Europe by storm in recent years. As if choosing from well-known names such as Glastonbury in the UK, Roskilde in Denmark and Rock Werchter in Belgium wasn’t difficult enough, now you have to add newcomers to your list. – Destinations like the Balkans and other parts of Eastern Europe.

New additions to Europe’s festival scene tend to be much cheaper than their more well-known counterparts. While most attract at least a few big names, you can usually expect to see more obscure bands. So if you’re interested in seeing the biggest acts possible, stick to the festival classics but be prepared to pay the price and get covered in more mud.

Not a fan of soaking to the core? Look to southern European countries where the weather is reliably sunny, unlike the UK and most of central and northern Europe.

Established festivals

Sziget in the Hungarian capital of Budapest is one of the longest festivals in Europe with an adrenaline-charged seven-day event featuring around 1000 acts. Held on Old Buda Island in the Danube River, attendees have easy access to the city, its sights and amenities whenever a break or shower is needed. Considering the duration of the event, tickets are cheap at 200Euro with camping.

Headliners this summer from August 6 to 13 include Hearts, Placebo, The Stone Roses and Two Door Cinema Club. When not watching a band, you might be playing a game of football, trying your luck at indoor rowing, or watching a movie.

Tea in the Park is Scotland’s answer to Glastonbury. Based in Kinross-shire, the three-day party takes place in a series of sprawling fields. For those keen to take a break from live music, attractions include a funfair, cinema and charity village.

Highlights of the year include New Order, David Guetta, Snow Patrol and Kasabian.

Ticket prices for the event from July 6 to 8 are as high as around £200 for the weekend, including camping.

With no Glastonbury schedule in 2012 (due to a lot of portaloos being created at the London Olympics!), this is where you should go instead.

A newcomer to the festival scene

Ranked by The Times newspaper as one of the best festivals in Europe, INMusic in Croatia is set on the idyllic and aptly named Youth Island in Lake Jarun in the country’s capital, Zagreb.

The two day event from 29th to 30th June 2012 is blessed with sunny weather and cool, cool weather. Apart from the great live music, you can try your hand at kayaking, hiking, cycling or just exploring the magnificent Zagreb and its nightlife. Tickets won’t break the bank at around 55Euro.

Plan B, Franz Ferdinand, Gogol Bordello and The Cranberries are some of the summer’s biggest acts.

Already the proud owner of the British Festival Guide’s “Best Overseas Festival” award, Positives in Latvia is fast becoming a summer staple. Held in an ultra-scenic coastal forest near the border with Estonia, the two-day event draws an international crowd into the pine trees until nightfall. Outdoor spa facilities, cinema and yoga classes are available for those who get out early.

Tickets at around 40Euro, food and drinks are pretty wallet-friendly by any standards.

2012 headliners include Keane, Friendly Fires, The Vaccines, Damien Rice and Niki & The Dove. Expect to see lots of Baltic bands from July 20-21.

Festival essentials

At festivals big and small, established and new, your best friend will be a pair of festival vines. Mud and portaloos are common features so there’s no better way to keep your feet dry and clean.

Wet wipes and painkillers come joint second in the race for the ultimate celebration.
