The Origination and Rise of American Basketball

Many people follow the game of basketball without knowing about its rich history. Basketball, like all other sports, has a unique origin story. James Naismith created this lively and active game to provide children and adults with something to play inside during the cold winter months. James was a teacher at the Christian Association Training School. While there, he was asked to create an indoor game that could be used for both entertainment and physical education. He began his work in the winter of 1891 by comparing the games he had played as a child. One particular sport had a major influence on what would later be called basketball. The game was called “Duck on a Rock” and involved one person protecting his “duck” from others. Naismith also took ideas from earlier religious traditions created by the Mayans and Aztecs. These cultures used rubber balls and rings for one of their inner games. The ring rested on a pole and shots were fired vertically. After a thorough study, he created the game of basketball.

Basketball originally had thirteen rules that were easy to understand and follow. The ball itself can be thrown in many directions, batted and must be caught by the player’s hands. Players could not run around the ball. It had to be thrown between the players. Dirty tricks like tripping, pushing and holding were not allowed. A foul was defined as a violation of the above rules and using the fist to knock the ball out of a player’s hand. Three consecutive fouls by one team earned the other team a point. Baskets can be made by throwing the ball or batting it from the player’s hand. A ball out of bounds is thrown back into play and belongs to the first player to make contact with it. The umpire will note the foul and judge the overall play of the game. When the ball was in play, out of bounds, time was kept and the umpires decided which team the ball belonged to. Naismith clocked up fifteen minutes between the two halves. A five-minute break was given between halves. Whoever scored the most goals during this period was the winner of the game. Basketball still follows the same basic rules today.

The first game was held on 29 December 1891. Soccer balls and peach baskets were used for this celebration. With the help of the US Army and teachers, basketball became popular around the world. While Americans were fighting in Europe during World War I, they noticed the game and started playing it wherever they went. Physical education teachers also started using basketball in their curriculum and the game became a popular sport. The National Basketball Association was not formed until June 1946. Several minor championships and leagues had formed before this time, but most disbanded fairly quickly. Racial integration in the League began in 1942. Then came the game as we know it today.
