What Happend to the Patriots Fans in Gillette Stadium

I have been a Saints fan for the past few years. Please explain to me. When you live in a geographic area you usually root for your home team like I do the Red Sox, the Celtics, the Bruins. I love the Patriots. I was raised a “Pats fan” and watched them win some and lose some at Gillette Stadium over the years. But when you don’t attend a home team game in 7-10 years, they start to lose that “home team feeling”. When I watch a game on TV and the stadium is empty after 3 quarters, there is a sense of disappointment in the hearts of fans watching the game now. I also realize that they are not the same fans I have enjoyed sitting next to over the years.

A few years ago I went to a Patriots game. It was a playoff game between the New England Patriots and the Denver Broncos. I sat on the upper level and froze for three hours. The hot cocoa and adrenaline kept me happy for three hours on my feet. It was the New England Patriots AFC Championship! They won but eventually lost to the Green Bay Packers in the Superbowl. I haven’t been back since.

It’s fitting that my body was abused at one of the coldest games I’ve ever attended. The Patriots were on a nationally televised game (they had been banned from Monday Night Football for years), they were in the playoffs for the first time in a long time, the crowd was pumped throughout the game, high fives were flying among the fans and I lost my voice chanting Jam-Ba-Ly-A. I gave my time as a fan. I sat in a cold aluminum seat, watched little to no scoring games, lost and tried to lead a team to a sub-par quarterback. I used to attend these games with my uncle as a kid and loved every moment of it…..win it, lose it, but the Willie Clay game ended up being the “big play” on that blustery cold night in Foxboro. More interceptions than sent the Pats to the Superbowl that time…

Flash-forward to today…if you want to attend a football game and don’t have a season ticket or work for a sponsoring corporation, you have one of two options. Take out $200 or watch it from home. I am not used to seeing the crowd of fans seen on TV. If the score is one-sided in either direction, it ends before the fourth quarter or sooner. I’m assuming they could beat the home traffic…traffic that I used to wait hours for after games when Route 1 wasn’t the easily accessible highway it is today, nor the express exits / dedicated lanes for their “luxury box customers”. . No more aluminum. Pink is the overwhelming majority of Patriots baseball caps.

And the fans are spoiled! Because the Patriots have won 3 Super Bowls…I’m sure that’s part of it…but I literally scream at the TV when I’m at home and my team needs it.

Bob Kraft was a fan, spending his time in those aluminum seats. Why did he forget about you? The Red Sox have bleachers, the Bruins and Celtics have upper decks, and they have 50-70 home games. You have 8 chances to attend a home game in a given football season. The Patriots have had the highest ticket prices over the years and are now second only to Dallas, and the Patriots have priced true football fans out of the stadium and into their homes. The Patriots Football Game is no longer about football game bad calls and chants of d-fences, it’s a place to network between business partners. Fair weather fans can afford to pay to attend because it’s a social status symbol when you have money and means. General fans cannot attend. I’m not advocating free tickets or even free rides when all your seats are overpriced or gobbled up by ticket agencies and sold for hundreds of dollars, not the type of fan who can afford to attend a game.

What happened to my beloved Foxboro? Bob was a craft fan; He was “one of us”… sitting next to us in those aluminum seats (he made that clear when he bought the team and won the first Superbowl.) Why did he forget about us?

Below is the quote from Telegram that inspired me to write this. Several players have echoed this request to fans in the past (including Ted Johnson in radio interviews on the Hillman Morning Show). I hope you organization chooses to make some changes…

“One reason is that Gillette Stadium is open at one end, which can allow noise to escape. But who’s sitting in the seats — or not sitting — is a big factor.

The second level is almost entirely club seating and filled with high rollers who have access to the indoor lounge. He usually sees a lot of action when the game is on.

Additionally, the average ticket price to a Patriots game is the second highest in the NFL and was first for several years until Cowboys Stadium opened last season. Worth the many die-hard (loud) fans outside the building.”

I became a Saints fan when I saw the “Return to the Dome” game on Monday Night Football in New Orleans. It was electric, it was emotionally charged, it was football that I was used to, it was football and I followed that wave to the previous years Super Bowl. I wanted to get back to Foxboro before the preseason to watch the Saints – Pats preseason game. Tickets were 65.00…I didn’t write this as a complaint, I just wanted to give you perspective from a fan’s point of view. I know your organization has options to do the right thing I know there are many ways to change the fan base to what it was before… maybe a section of possible price seats, a window call to avoid these seats. Automated Ticket Agency… I have a few that I use at home when I’m fired… My pride and joy is the Vuvuzela (I use it at my house and it drives my fiance and neighbors crazy but it works) I’m sure the right fan Class and a few thousand vuvuzelas will eliminate the home team disadvantage experienced by your players.
